Plants for Dry Shade Gardens

Dry shade is the most challenging planting situation in any garden — whether beneath a canopy of mature trees, against a north-facing wall, or in the rain-shadow of a building where even weeds seem to think twice. The combination of low light and low moisture rules out the vast majority of garden plants, and trial and error in these spots is an expensive business.

This collection exists because we have done the work for you. Every plant here has been grown in our field nursery under real conditions — exposed to summer drought, root competition, and minimal light — and selected because it genuinely performs rather than merely survives. A good rule of thumb for dry shade is that plants with smaller, thicker or tougher foliage survive longest, and the more established they are, the better they handle drought — principles that have guided every choice in this collection.

What you will find here is not a compromise. Dry shade planting at its best uses foliage contrast — leaf colour, texture and form — to create something genuinely beautiful: broad leaves next to narrow ones, glossy against matt, dark green beside silver or pale chartreuse. These are plants with structure, presence and year-round ornamental value that earn their place in the hardest corners of the garden. Plants like Daphne laureola 'Philippi', Vinca minor, Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae and Geranium macrorrhizum — proven performers that reward patience with permanence.
