- It lives around 4-5 years but will happily self-seed so do not worry if your plant looks like it is coming to its end.

The Tales & The Botany: Hellebore argutifolius

The name for the genus is from the Greek name for the plant as 'helleboros' and the specific epithet comes the Latin word 'argutus' meaning "sharp" and 'folius' meaning "leafed" in reference to the sharply toothed leaves.

There is a bit of a botanical debate around whether Hellebore argutifolius is the same thing as Helleborus lividus subspecies corsicus.

H. lividus is from the island of Majorca and is a considerably smaller plant with darker purple-toned-foliage .

H. argutifolius is from Corsica (and Sardegna) and is taller and brighter in color.

There are also known hybrids between the two species, usually called Helleborus x sternii.

So naturally, things can get very confusing.

I've kept the name H. argutifolius until the botanists come to a decisive verdict.
