Verbena bonariensis is a tall, breezy perennial that produces an abundance of bright purple flowers that float above the garden all summer long.

The breezy, lilac flowers attract tons of butterflies and provide nectar for bees and other beneficial garden insects.
The height and elegance of the plant makes it ideal for back-row planting in a dense garden.
Its airy structure creates light, floating purple specks above your garden if you prefer to watch the butterflies from your porch!

The Tales & The Botany: Verbena bonariensis

Verbena means ‘sacred bough’ in Latin, a reference to the leafy twigs of vervaine (Verbena officinalis) which were historically carried by priests, used in wreaths for druidic rituals, and for medicine.

The name "verbena" was given to the plant by Virgil and Pliny the Elder.

The common name, vervaine, comes from the Celtic name, ‘ferfain’, meaning to drive away (fer) a stone (faen) - a reference to practices that used vervaine to clear urinary stones through diuresis.
