Salvia verticillata 'Endless Love' is a magnificent fragrant perennial known for its hardiness and drought tolerance and its particularly long flowering season. 

It's characterized by flowers arranged in distinctive whorls along the stems - hence "verticillata." The species has paired, aromatic leaves and two-lipped flowers in whorls forming branched spikes.

It's extraordinarily hardy and drought tolerant, surviving five heatwaves in 2026 with elegance - bursting into bloom in between the heatwaves when the weather permitted. 

The thick leaves are covered in fine hairs , creating a mat at the base of the plant - when planted densely they can block out all weeds and keep the humidity in the soil, forming their own ecosystem. 

Easy self-seeders, they will easily colonize a difficult area and flower profusely from June all the way to September.

Salvia really do not enjoy soggy roots so make sure that your windowbox/gardenbox/soil is well-draining.
The Botany

Salvia verticillata is an herbaceous, non-woody perennial in the Lamiaceae (mint) family, native to Western Europe, the Near East, and the plains of Central Asia.

It's characterized by flowers arranged in distinctive whorls along the stems - hence "verticillata." The species has paired, aromatic leaves and two-lipped flowers in whorls forming branched spikes.

'Endless Love' forms a rosette of stems clothed in 5-inch-long, fuzzy, hastate (arrowhead-shaped) green leaves, topped from mid-June with 9-inch-long upright branched spikes of light lavender flowers, reaching roughly 70cm high by 1m wide.

It blooms continuously from June through the end of September - an unusually long run for a salvia. It rarely lives more than 5–6 years in gardens, so treat it as a mid-lived perennial rather than a permanent fixture.

Growing conditions: it's cold-hardy, tolerates heat and relative drought, is easy to grow in most garden soils, and prefers bright, sunny spots but dislikes waterlogged winter soil.
The Myth

'Endless Love' came from the Dutch plantsman Piet Oudolf, arising as a seedling from Salvia verticillata 'Purple Rain,' and is a relatively recent introduction praised for being notably more vigorous than its parent, with a longer flowering period.
