Miscanthus sinensis 'Ruby Cute' creates delicate, silver feathery flower heads in the fall that rise beautifully against its colour shifting foliage.

In the autumn, this Miscanthus shifts from a gleaming green to a boisterous ruby red, adding color at a time when many of the big flower shows go quiet.

The blooms are magnificent as well - soft and silvery, gently waving above the stark red arching leaves.

This ornamental grass forms neat, arching clumps that typically reach a height of 90-120 cm, making it suitable for smaller gardens or front-of-border plantings.

🌱 Planting : Add a scoop of well-rotted organic matter and some grit to improve drainage.

🌿Winter: add a generous layer of mulch to provide an insulating layer around the roots. You can leave the foliage above ground for wintertime beauty

✂️Spring: Cut back the previous year's growth each spring to ground level. If she's getting quite big, this is the time to dig up and divide.

The genus Miscanthus belongs to the Poaceae (grass) family and includes around twenty species native to East Asia and subtropical Africa.

Miscanthus sinensis, the most widely cultivated garden species, is native to Japan, China and Korea, where it grows in grasslands and woodland edges.

'Ruby Cute' is part of a newer generation of dwarf cultivars, bred to limit height (often under 80 cm) without sacrificing the ornamental quality of the flower plumes.

In Japan, miscanthus grass (known as susuki) is closely tied to the mid-autumn moon-viewing festival, Tsukimi, where its stems decorate altars set up to admire the full moon, offered as a symbolic wish for a good harvest.

Its swaying silhouette in the wind has long been a recurring motif in Japanese classical painting and poetry, symbolising the fleeting, melancholic beauty of autumn (mono no aware).
