Linum perenne is a short-lived perennial flax that produces bouquets of ephemeral, beautiful sky-blue flowers throughout the summer.
The plant itself forms a small tuft of airy, elegant stems covered in tiny, evergreen leaves.
Each sky-blue flower lives but one day but they are produced daily so the show has no intermission.
Linum perenne, like Nigella or Verbena, are used often for their airy quality - lightening a garden and creating movement with color.

Do not be fooled by the slender, delicate-looking stems.
The fibrous stems are extremely difficult to break and were once used in Europe to make linen and rope.
In fact, the flax plants which are commercially grown today for making linen (from the stems) and linseed oil (from the seeds) are several varieties of annual flax, Linum usitatissimum, a cousin of our Linum perenne.
