Lavandula (x) intermedia 'Phenomenal' is a new hybrid lavandin variety selected for its ability to withstand - and even thrive - in the cold and damp that are characteristic of many French winter months.

As this usually announces the death of our lavender friends, this hybrid is a wonderful solution to our scorching Mediterranean summers but our still-wet and freezing winters.

A long, abundant bloom of bright blue-violet flower spikes, wrapped in a powerful lavender fragrance, adds to the list of qualities of this truly exceptional variety.

This variety offers a particularly long and abundant summer bloom, from July to August. Long, slender stems rise well above the mound of foliage, bearing long spikes of vivid blue-violet flowers that are highly attractive to bees.

Its evergreen leaves, aromatic when crushed, fairly broad and rounded, take on a silvery-grey color that becomes lighter the drier the soil. In cooler climates, what the plant gains in foliage and robustness, it loses in color intensity and fragrance.

Lavender does not enjoy the frost or having soggy roots - think about increasing drainage by adding inorganic mulch (such as clay beads or gravel) to your soil mixture.
Trim back when it gets too leggy

The genus Lavandula belongs to the Lamiaceae family.

'Phenomenal' (Niko) is one of the hybrids resulting from a cross between the species Lavandula latifolia and L. angustifolia.

These two species occur in the wild in the same mid-mountain environment and cross naturally.

They have given rise to numerous cultivars, all easy to establish in the garden, tolerant of chalky soil, and remarkably healthy. 'Phenomenal' was bred in 2007 by Lloyd R. Traven in Kintnersville, United States.

The term "Lavandula" has its roots in the Latin "lavare," meaning "to wash." This connection is clear when you consider that lavender was used for centuries to scent baths and linens.

Lavender essential oil, when diluted with a carrier oil, is commonly used as a relaxant with massage therapy.

And you will have seen both the petals and the oil in handmade soap - it has historically been the most popular ingredient since the dawn of soap.

The flower was first recorded by Greek botanist Pedanius Dioscorides as the name στοιχάς stoikhas, originating on the Stoechades Islands,

Lavender, with its purple flowers and captivating scent, is a plant that has endured through the centuries. Its origins trace back to ancient Persia. The Greeks and Romans already prized it for its therapeutic properties and delicate fragrance. They used it to perfume their baths, clothing, and even places of worship.

Lavender's medicinal properties were also well known. It was used to relieve headaches, muscle pain, and sleep troubles. The Celts, for their part, made a lotion from lavender essential oil known as "Celtic Nard," used in medicine and perfumery.
