Lavandula x intermedia is often called lavandin or French lavender. It is a sterile hybrid cross between Lavandula angustifolia and Lavandula latifolia (spike lavender), creating both a powerfully fragrant variety as well as a long-blooming one.

'Tesseract' has a more densely packed habit with shorter stems and larger flowers. It remains a large Lavender at 1m wide and will make a statement in any garden; particularly when planted in mass.

But this plant is more than just blooms - the silver foliage that emerges in the spring is magnificent, the large, thick leaves reflecting the first rays of warm sun.

This is a true three season perennial!

The Myth

The term "Lavandula" has its roots in the Latin "lavare," meaning "to wash." This connection is clear when you consider that lavender was used for centuries to scent baths and linens.

Lavender essential oil, when diluted with a carrier oil, is commonly used as a relaxant with massage therapy.

And you will have seen both the petals and the oil in handmade soap - it has historically been the most popular ingredient since the dawn of soap.

The flower was first recorded by Greek botanist Pedanius Dioscorides as the name στοιχάς stoikhas, originating on the Stoechades Islands,

Lavender, with its purple flowers and captivating scent, is a plant that has endured through the centuries. Its origins trace back to ancient Persia. The Greeks and Romans already prized it for its therapeutic properties and delicate fragrance. They used it to perfume their baths, clothing, and even places of worship.

Lavender's medicinal properties were also well known. It was used to relieve headaches, muscle pain, and sleep troubles. The Celts, for their part, made a lotion from lavender essential oil known as "Celtic Nard," used in medicine and perfumery.
