Lavandula × intermedia 'Exceptional' is a modern white lavandin variety selected for its excellent resilience, compact growth, and a particularly bright white bloom.

She will form a very dense, uniform, well-branched cushion of foliage - this makes it exceptionally great for edging or border tightening planting.

Its evergreen, silvery-grey foliage stays decorative year-round. The leaves here are narrow and aromatic when crushed.

Lavender does not enjoy the frost or having soggy roots - think about increasing drainage by adding inorganic mulch (such as clay beads or gravel) to your soil mixture.
Trim back when it gets too leggy

Lavandula × intermedia 'Exceptional' thrives in warm, sunny exposures and poor, perfectly drained soils. Like all lavandins, it prefers stony, chalky, or sandy ground over rich, moist soil.

This variety corresponds to the cultivar Lavandula × intermedia 'Hillav', also marketed under the name Exceptional®.

It was created by Hillier Nurseries in collaboration with Lloyd Traven of Peace Tree Farm, then introduced to Europe by variety-distribution specialists such as Plantipp and Globe Planter.

It originated as a natural seedling of the famous 'Phenomenal' variety, from which it retains several qualities of robustness.

This is one of the few situations in which we have bought young seedlings as there is no other way to obtain these trademarked varieties.

The term "Lavandula" has its roots in the Latin "lavare," meaning "to wash." This connection is clear when you consider that lavender was used for centuries to scent baths and linens.

Lavender essential oil, when diluted with a carrier oil, is commonly used as a relaxant with massage therapy.

And you will have seen both the petals and the oil in handmade soap - it has historically been the most popular ingredient since the dawn of soap.

The flower was first recorded by Greek botanist Pedanius Dioscorides as the name στοιχάς stoikhas, originating on the Stoechades Islands,

Lavender, with its purple flowers and captivating scent, is a plant that has endured through the centuries. Its origins trace back to ancient Persia. The Greeks and Romans already prized it for its therapeutic properties and delicate fragrance. They used it to perfume their baths, clothing, and even places of worship.

Lavender's medicinal properties were also well known. It was used to relieve headaches, muscle pain, and sleep troubles. The Celts, for their part, made a lotion from lavender essential oil known as "Celtic Nard," used in medicine and perfumery.
