Iris giganticaerulea is a rhizomatous perennial that produces beautiful deep blue fragrant flowers in the midst of bright green leaves

The flowers are a deep blue, musky fragrant, with a bright yellow center. The flowering will be most spectacular if the plant is in full sun.

The leaves are long, sword-like and remains attractive throughout the winter. The rhizomatous roots will quickly form dense colonies, creating large clumps of swaying leaves.

Unlike most garden irises, Iris giganticaerulea thrives in consistently moist to wet soils and will even tolerate standing water for extended periods — making it an outstanding choice for pond margins, rain gardens, and boggy areas.

Its coastal origins also give it good tolerance of humidity and mild winters, making it particularly well suited to gardens in the south of France and other Mediterranean-influenced climates.

The Botany

Floral Morphology
The name giganticaerulea says it all — giant and blue. The flowers are among the largest of any iris species, measuring 12 to 15 cm in diameter and sometimes more. Each flower is composed of six tepals in two whorls. The three outer tepals, the falls, are broad, spreading and slightly recurved, typically in a rich sky blue to violet-blue, marked with a central yellow to white signal and delicate darker veining. The three inner tepals, the standards, are held more upright and are slightly narrower, in a softer, paler blue. Three petaloid style branches arch elegantly over the stamens, as is characteristic of all irises. The overall effect is one of extraordinary grace and scale — this is an iris that commands attention.

Ecology
Iris giganticaerulea is native to the coastal marshes, swamps and wet prairies of the Gulf Coast of the United States, particularly Louisiana, where it grows wild in vast natural colonies. It is one of the parent species of the Louisiana Iris hybrids, a group highly valued in horticulture for their tolerance of wet conditions and their exceptional range of colours.

The Myth

Irises in general have long symbolized hope, wisdom, and courage.

In ancient Greece, the iris was associated with the goddess Iris, the messenger of the gods, who was believed to travel between heaven and earth on a rainbow.
