The Botany

The previous genus to which the plant belonged - probably a reference to the stature and floral display of some species in this genus.

The specific epithet is after Ferdinand Jacob Lindheimer, a German-born botanist who collected extensively in Texas.
The Myth

Oenothera: it is believed to be derived from the Greek words οίνος θήρα (oinos thera) meaning "wine seeker".

This may be a reference to the red veins that you can see in the flowers - whether they are pink or ivory white. Or just to the delightful journey of seeking wine.

Gaura: from Greek γαῦρος (gaûros) meaning "superb".
