Aromatic Spiral: A Living Ecosystem at Laboratoire Rivadis
An ambitious aromatic spiral project has been completed at Laboratoire Rivadis, located in Louzy, in the northern Deux-Sèvres region. This impressive project involved the planting of 1,450 trees and shrubs, comprising 20 different species carefully selected for their complementarity and ecological value.
A company renowned for its expertise in manufacturing hygiene and care products, Laboratoire Rivadis expressed a desire to integrate more nature and biodiversity into the heart of its industrial site. With this vision, the idea of an aromatic spiral emerged as a powerful symbol of balance between innovation, sustainability, and environmental respect.
We had the pleasure of collaborating with the Créateur de Forêt team to design and implement this plant spiral. This joint effort allowed us to create an arrangement that is both aesthetic and functional, designed to evolve through the seasons and years.
🌿 What is an Aromatic Spiral?
An aromatic spiral is a permaculture design element that creates multiple microclimates within a compact space. The spiral shape provides varying levels of sun exposure, drainage, and moisture, allowing diverse plants with different needs to thrive together in harmony.

Project Goals & Benefits
The spiral, a true oasis of greenery, was designed to:
- Thrive in the sun, offering a space conducive to the harmonious development of aromatic and melliferous plants
- Attract pollinators (bees, butterflies, bumblebees, etc.), thereby promoting local biodiversity
- Grow and enrich year after year, becoming a living and resilient ecosystem
- Enable harvesting of plants for multiple uses, including aromatherapy, cooking, and nature education
- Demonstrate environmental commitment by integrating nature into an industrial setting
- Create visual beauty that evolves through the seasons
This project perfectly illustrates Laboratoire Rivadis's commitment to combining industrial performance with environmental responsibility, creating a space that is simultaneously useful, poetic, and sustainable.
The Complete Plant List: Aromatic Spiral Species
Each plant was selected for its aromatic properties, ecological benefits, and ability to thrive in the spiral's unique microclimates:
Aromatic & Medicinal Herbs:
- Yarrow (Achillea 'Little Moonshine') – Medicinal properties, attracts beneficial insects
- Thyme (Thymus longicaulis 'Odoratus') – Culinary herb, drought-tolerant
- Lavender (Lavandula stoechas) – Fragrant, pollinator magnet
- Rosemary (Rosmarinus repens) – Evergreen, culinary and medicinal
- Sage (Salvia lavandulifolia) – Aromatic foliage, drought-resistant
- Oregano (Origanum 'Thumble Variety') – Culinary classic, pollinator-friendly
- Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) – Calming properties, ground cover
- Catmint (Nepeta faassenii) – Long-blooming, bee favorite
- Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium 'Aureum') – Golden foliage, medicinal
- Bee Balm (Monarda didyma) – Vibrant flowers, pollinator paradise
- Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) – Edible flowers and leaves
- Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) – Citrus-scented, calming tea
- Mint (Mentha 'Chartreuse') – Bright foliage, culinary herb
- Sorrel (Rumex sanguineus) – Edible leaves, ornamental veins
- Comfrey (Symphytum ibericum) – Nutrient accumulator, medicinal
Design Principles: Color & Light
I organized the plantings according to color and light exposure, with the goal of optimizing both their longevity and visual harmony. This carefully considered arrangement not only ensures balanced and sustainable plant growth but also creates an aesthetic and coherent ensemble, pleasant to contemplate throughout the year.
Each plant was positioned according to its specific needs for sunlight and shade, while taking into account the chromatic palette it offers across different seasons. The objective is to compose a living landscape where hues respond to and complement each other, creating a natural and balanced atmosphere that is simultaneously beautiful, functional, and sustainable.
Key design considerations:
- Sun exposure – Plants positioned according to their light requirements
- Color harmony – Complementary hues that evolve through seasons
- Height variation – Creating visual depth and structure
- Bloom timing – Ensuring continuous color and nectar sources
- Texture contrast – Mixing fine and bold foliage
- Functional grouping – Placing plants with similar uses together
