Salvia sclarea - Clary Sage

Salvia sclarea is a biennial or short-lived herbaceous perennial that is largely grown for its essential oil.
The distilled essential oil is used widely in perfumes and as a muscatel flavoring for vermouths, wines, and liqueurs.
This does not mean that the plant itself is not magnificent!
The flowers appear in little bouquets over a meter high on long square stems covered in little hairs. The bouquets are called verticils, with 2-6 flowers in each verticil, and are held in large colorful bracts that range in color from pale mauve to lilac or white to pink with a pink mark on the edge. It's majestic and worthy of looking at for hours.
They are imposing. elegant and fragrant and they attract pollinators!
The foliage is a bit fuzzy (covered in little hairs) and of a light green-grey color.
The Tale: Salvia sclarea - Clary Sage
Salvia (salveo) meaning 'I am healed' or 'I am well', referring to the medicinal qualities of some of the species.
Sclarea (clarus) meaning 'clear' or 'bright'. Tea made from the plant's leaves said to clear the brain so that one might see into the future. Would this be a blessing or a curse?
