Salvia nutans (Nodding Sage, syn. Salvia pendula) produces unique nodding heads of stunning rich blue plumes, distinguishing this variety of Sage from all the others.  

It forms a basal rosette of large, arrow-shaped (hastate), mid-green leaves, from which erect, often-branched flowering stems rise.

Rather than the upright spikes typical of most salvias, each stem ends in wisteria-like, drooping clusters of purple-blue flowers - the species name "nutans" itself refers to this nodding, drooping character. Many have described the flowers as "hanging like bunches of grapes."

Salvia really do not enjoy soggy roots so make sure that your windowbox/gardenbox/soil is well-draining.
The Botany

This is a variety that was named by Linnaeus nearly three centuries ago that never really made it into general cultivation until recently.

One well-known US nursery (Plant Delights) discovered it in the German garden of plantsman Georg Uebelhart and were "smitten" - surprised both by how elegant it was and, later, by how well it handled hot, humid summers far from its native steppe climate, which is what convinced them to start offering it.


Its native range runs from Central and Eastern Europe through the Caucasus, and possibly into Siberia, with sources also citing the Balkans and the meadow-steppe belt stretching from Hungary across Bulgaria, Ukraine, and Russia.
