Lavandula multifida 'Torch Blue' is a delightful Lavender with an unusual foliage and a wonderful oregano fragrance - not to mention the spectacular blooms!

The velvety, ferny foliage has a wonderfully unusual oregano fragrance, while the trident flower heads are sweetly scented.

The flowers take the form of soft blue-violet tridents that contrast beautifully against the grey-green colour of the soft ferny foliage.

A rare variety not often seen in our French gardens, this variety of Lavender is a very water-wise choice for gardeners with limited water supply.
It is drought resistant, and revels in summer heat, and has a higher tolerance of humidity than some of the other lavenders.
It can tolerate light frosts, but will benefit from some overhead shelter in areas with heavier frosts.

🌱 Lavender does not enjoy the frost or having soggy roots - think about increasing drainage by adding inorganic mulch (such as clay beads or gravel) to your soil mixture.
✂️ Trim back when it gets too leggy
🪴Add a handful of lime twice a year.

The Botany

Lavandula multifida 'Torch Minty Ice' is a cultivated variety (cultivar) bred by Hem Genetics, a plant breeding company based in the Netherlands.

Lavandula multifida is often commonly known as “Fern Leaf Lavender” for (hopefully) obvious reasons.


The ferny leaves form a low, dense mound of evergreen (and of course delightfully scented) foliage of approx. 30cm in height.
Then the trident flowers float far above on long, woolly stems up to approx. 80cm. high.

All of the Lavandula multifida family boast unusual three pronged trident flowers, that wave in the breeze on long, slender, woolly grey stems.
The Myth

Lavender essential oil, when diluted with a carrier oil, is commonly used as a relaxant with massage therapy.

And you will have seen both the petals and the oil in handmade soap - it has historically been the most popular ingredient since the dawn of soap.

The flower was first recorded by Greek botanist Pedanius Dioscorides as the name στοιχάς stoikhas, originating on the Stoechades Islands.

Fern leaf lavender was traditionally used in herbal medicine for anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties.
It is also still widely used today for cosmetics, soapmaking and toiletries because of it’s fresh scents.
