Lagerstroemia indica 'Rose Fuchsia' is a fine, hardy crepe myrtle (Indian lilac) with a late but sublime deep pink bloom.
This shrub, with its naturally generous and branching habit, can become a small tree if patiently and meticulously pruned. It also charms with its matte green foliage that changes colour in autumn, and its decorative bark.
The flowers, whose texture recalls crepe, are gathered in large, dense panicles at the tips of the current year's branches. On 'Rose Fuchsia', the buds are pink, then open into an intense deep pink, almost red.
The deciduous, leathery foliage emerges red, then turns matte green. It is made up of small oval leaves, which often take on lovely yellow, orange or red shades in autumn before falling. Finally, to finish in style, its bark is magnificent on older specimens: smooth and beige streaked with reddish brown, it peels off in prettily coloured plates (cinnamon, faded red, dusty pink, cream).
Crape myrtles are the glory of south-west gardens, as they prefer the warm, humid Atlantic climate to the dry, windy Mediterranean.
