Gardening Tips

🌿 These highly floriferous evergreen sub-shrubs make wonderful ground cover.
⛔ It does not enjoy damp conditions over winter, so do get that drainage sorted > gravel, sand, grit, perlite.
💦 Needs regular, moderate watering during its first year after planting — after that it largely looks after itself.
✂️ Post-flowering, pinch the spent flower stems and trim back the foliage

The Botany

Belonging to the Cistaceae family, the Helianthemums in this collection come from two botanical species: Helianthemum apenninum, native to southern Europe, and H. nummularium, widespread across Europe and Turkey.

Like their wild ancestors, they thrive in chalky, stony and sandy soils in full sun — without these conditions they will not flower and will gradually perish - contrary to any logic that you may believe.

Helianthemum forms a low-growing, spreading, dense sub-shrub, cushion-shaped, around 25 cm tall and 30–35 cm wide. Its evergreen to semi-evergreen foliage (depending on climate) is made up of small linear leaves that vary in appearance across the plants in this mix. Some are more or less glossy, others softly downy, and their colour ranges from dark green to silvery grey-green.

This foliage sets off an abundant and luminous display of varied colour, either single-toned or bicoloured.

From May to August, the plants are smothered in a multitude of small cup-shaped flowers, 3 cm across, with five slightly crinkled petals and a central tuft of golden stamens.

The Myth

Helianthemum are known to form symbioses with mycorrhizal fungi. In the Mediterranean they are associated with Terfeziaceae, the desert truffles.

Together, plant and fungus may have a beneficial effect on the arid local landscapes, preventing soil erosion and desertification.
