Codonopsis is a sweet, nourishing root that comes to us from China where it is known as Dang Shen.

It is often called the “Poor Man’s Ginseng” as it is often used as a substitute for the rarer, more expensive true ginseng, to which it has similar properties.

The rhizome (sometimes referred to as a root), which are long, white and sweet in flavour are harvested after three years of growth.
🍵 The dried root is typically brewed into herbal teas, added to soups, or taken in tincture form

Therapeutic compounds in the root include alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, and polysaccharides.

Gardening Tips

☀️ Plants only succeed in full sun if the soil remains moist during the growing season
❄️ Although quite cold-hardy when dormant, the young growth in spring, even on mature plants, is frost-tender and so it is best to grow the plants in a position sheltered from the early morning sun

The Botany

The name is derived from the Greek words “Kodon” (meaning bell) and “Opsis” (meaning likeness), reflecting its bell-shaped green flowers with purple veins.

There are over 40 species of the Campanulaceae family, and 21 are used therapeutically.

- Codonopsis, dang shen (not to be confused with dan shen or red sage), bellflower, Chinese bellflower, “poor-man’s ginseng”, tojin (Japanese)

- a blend of Codonopsis species is utilized and labeled as the singular “Codonopsis Radix” in Traditional Chinese Medicine

The Myth

Codonopsis Root has a long history of being used for its immune-enhancing properties, working with both innate and adaptive immunity. Studies suggest that the herb contribute to a more robust defense against infections and illnesses.

It is also noted that “immunomodulatory effect of CR is characterized by its gentle and prolonged nature, distinguishing it from other potent immune stimulants.”

A traditional Qi tonic in TCM, codonopsis root is often used to invigorate health, increase energy levels, help combat fatigue and enhance overall vitality.
It is also known for supporting spleen and lung function, and fighting general fatigue.
