Passiflora caerulea 'Purple Haze'is a semi-evergreen climber with deeply serrated green foliage, and a mass of attractive purple and white flowers, creating a more tropical feeling around a pergola than with the classic Passiflora caerulea.
Each bloom opens for just a day or two, but the vine produces them in such steady succession through summer that the display feels continuous. Up close, the flowers reveal remarkable geometric precision — a radiating halo of thread-like filaments in blue, white and violet, poised above five broad petals and sepals, with the reproductive parts held aloft on a distinctive central column, almost architectural in structure.
The flowers are rich in nectar and pollen, drawing in bees and other pollinators through the height of summer — a nice bonus for anyone gardening with biodiversity in mind.

✂️ This is not a shy grower.
Given good conditions it will happily put on several metres of growth in a season, and can sucker or self-seed in favourable spots. An annual hard prune in late winter keeps it looking tidy, within bounds, and flowering strongly on the resulting fresh growth — so don't be afraid to cut it back hard; it rewards the treatment.

La Botanique
Passiflora caerulea is a vigorous, semi-evergreen to deciduous climbing vine native to South America (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay).
It climbs by means of curling tendrils and can reach 6–9 m in a single season under good conditions.
The flowers are the star of the show: intricate, saucer-shaped blooms roughly 8–10 cm across, with pale blue-white petals radiating around a striking corona of blue, white, and purple filaments, centered on a prominent stalked ovary and five golden-tipped stamens.
Flowering runs from summer into early autumn, sometimes followed by egg-shaped orange fruits (edible but far less flavorful than P. edulis, the commercial passionfruit).
Le Mythe
Spanish missionaries in 16th-century South America gave the flower its name, reading it as a living crucifixion scene: the three stigmas as the nails, the five anthers as the wounds of Christ, the fringed corona as the crown of thorns, the ten petals and sepals as the faithful apostles, and the tendrils as the whips used in the Passion.
The plant became known as the "Passion Flower" — passion here referring to the suffering of Christ, not romantic passion.
