Helianthus ‘Lemon Queen’ is a perennial sunflower that can grow up to two meters each year, producing beautiful daisy-like lemon-yellow blooms in late summer.

Stems are quite strong and do not need to be staked unless the plant is grown in very rich soil. This plant can grow wet or dry, is not fussy about soil conditions (though will grow taller with more mulching and shaded soil) and it seems to have no pests.

What makes 'Lemon Queen' really special is that it flowers in the transition period - just at the end of the summer cycles and just before the fall cycles begin. It's the end of summer lull and Lemon Queen will cheer you up as the summer begins to wind down. Because once she starts to flower, she will continue for many weeks with a few flowers opening right up to frost.

Gardening Tips

☀️ It prefers full sun and is content with ordinary, fairly fertile soil, which is fresh to occasionally dry.
🌱The lower half of the plant does not carry flowers so this is a plant for the back of the border.

The Botany

Most sources are vague about the parentage of this plant, but a couple of references say that it is a natural hybrid of US natives H. pauciflorus var. subrhomboideus (Stiff Sunflower)  x H. tuberosus (Jerusalem artichoke).

On Rock Garden has identified 2 varieties floating around. Some have quite pale yellow flowers and others have bright yellow flowers.
